Do not install test patches over your main EVE setup. Create and maintain a second installation of EVE (just copy the EVE folder to another location) and use that version to connect to the test server. Don't intall the test client from the CD, just copy your main folder to a new location.
The test patches never search for the the client folder. You must always browse to your test client folder. Be careful not to browse to your main EVE folder when installing a test patch.
If you patch your main client with a test patch you might not be able to connect to Tranquility and you might not be able patch your client up to the next release version and would have to reinstall the client.
Do not try to connect to Tranquility with the test version.
Please be advised that there is no customer support available on the test server. Lost items will not be replaced. Petitions cannot be filed for assistance.

You are responsible for knowing this post well, and keeping up with its changes.
It would help coordination if people using the chaos server were also in the IRC channel (#eve-chaos on irc.coldfront.net), it's helpful to be able to get people to do specific things in real time.
Note this server is for testing, as stated elsewhere in the forum and indeed this thread. You will be given toys to play with - we expect you to play with them, that's fine, but the object is to TEST, not play as if you were playing on live, as if the game were real. It's not, this is a testing environment. No live corporation antics will be tolerated; this means:
- no grabbing more than you need from the various hangars that will be available. There ought to be plenty to go around, there's no point hoarding.
- no camping unless we (BH or developer) tell you to (for example, testing station guns and so on).
- no corp tags in #eve-chaos - you're all independent for the time you're on Chaos.
- no bad behaviour in the IRC channel; we're (the BH team) volunteer testers, we don't have the time or inclination to deal with that.
- no complaining as and when characters are wiped/lost; the point of the exercise here is to test day-to-day things like combat, mining, travelling; balance issues and how the game *feels* to play - not long-term character development. Just to make that very clear.
- no hassling active developers with PMs asking for details. Please only PM a developer if they ask you to.
If you can't deal with those rules, please stay in Tranquility. Anyone flagrantly abusing them will have their Chaos access removed.
Because this server is for testing, you NEED to run the logserver and produce useful bug reports. One liners and unhelpful ones get deleted by the BH out of hand, and will not endear you. Useful ones will get noticed, and you might find yourself with an invite to join BH if you're especially eager to help, and industrious in an efficient manner.
Running the logserver is very easy, and every tester should do it. Before you load Eve, double click the logserver.exe in your Eve directory. In that window that appears, click file, then new workspace (shortcut is ctrl+w). Now load Eve. Notice how the logserver logs various things from the client. It is possible, and in fact preferred, to press ctrl+del to clear the log before you try to reproduce the bug you want a log of; this makes the file smaller AND removes your login details from it. Both are good things.
Bug reporting quick list of things to remember:
- Screenshots of error messages are not useful.
- Screenshots that are bitmaps and not converted to jpg should be a bannable offense. [}:)]
- Descriptions of graphical defects are FAR LESS USEFUL than a screenshot of such a defect.
- Word documents and executable files are deleted.
- Text files of errors are not useful.
- Saying "I did xyz and there was an error" is not useful. We get that so many times it's not funny.
- Being offensive is not helpful.
- Writing essays CAN be helpful, but conciseness is a virtue right next to godliness when it comes to bug reports - we have to read them all, and there's only 24 hours in our day, too.
- When uploading a compressed file to the bug report form, please list the filenames inside it; that's VERY useful.
- Also, include your dxdiag.txt, obtainable by running dxdiag (start | run | dxdiag, hit enter )and saving the information to a text file.
- Don't report a bug right away. See if you can reproduce it again. Then do it AGAIN, if possible. Keep paper notes, and write them up. It makes for MUCH more comprehensible and useful reports. If you can't reproduce it, ask someone else to have a go, to see whether they can based on your experience.
- Try to keep track of which bugs have been submitted to avoid duplication.
- Try to be a bit descriptive in the title, like "Char creation - amarr chars don't have noses" or something that helps the BH filter person to know what the report is about at a glance.
- Mention in your report things like where you were when it happened, what your character is, what skills might have affected it, things like that.

Which brings me to another point - installing the Chaos patches will prevent you from using that install on Tranquility until it catches up (TQ runs some builds behind while Chaos is used to check them out). There is no way to rollback a client-side patch. This leaves you with three choices - play only on Chaos (and don't care about long-term play), play on both servers (maintaining two builds, or keeping the full build and patches so you can reinstall whenever you want to swap from Chaos back to TQ), or play on just Tranquility.
If there's nothing specific going on, then there will be BHs in the channel and they may need people to check out bug reports that they are filtering, to improve them (by logging them, adding screenshots, making the text better; whatever). What this entails is their pasting IDs of reports into the channel, and saying what it needs to be improved. If people could then say which ID they're going to try to work on in channel, go off and do it, submit a new report, and then say what the new ID is in the channel, AND the old ID, so the BH knows to escalate the new one and trash the old one.

It is my understanding that it may not be possible for normal users to see bug report IDs any more. As such it becomes more important to label a report with a clear name, and indicate the build, as well as the server that it comes from.

"# Screenshots that are bitmaps and not converted to jpg should be a bannable offense. [}:)]"
Shouldn't they be in whatever the original format captured by EVE is, at least for bug reports?
Yes, TIFFs and BMPs are large, but on the other hand, JPEG is a lossy algorithm and some graphics glitches may need a pixel-accurate screenshot to assist with debugging.
I can understand this rule being in forum guidelines, but not in bug-reporting guidelines, as JPEG = intentional loss of data. ------------ Ezra Cornell pe0n, Xanadu Corporation |

A few pixels dont make any difference to the image or the use of it for examining visual bugs in 99.99% of cases, on the other hand, a BMP requires much longer to download for people that have to go through a large number of reports to filter out those that don't contain enough information.

my screengrabs are 7.5Mb. They'll be 15Mb when I get my twin monitor setup running...
I think jpeg's should be fine. at least, I'd hope so. .

I think you can compress BMPs with winzip reasonably well, lossless ofcourse. Still huge compared to JPG, but if pixel precision is required this might be a good way to go about it.

New: Crash handler
Crashing For the crash handler to work, you need to crash the application. Without crashes this gizmo is pretty much useless.
When EVE server or client crashes a dump file is written in a folder called logs, which is located in the install root. The name of the dump file looks something like this:
#crash.2003.06.04 11.33.44.dmp
If a logger was running there should be an error entry indicating that a dump file was generated: Exefile SHUTDOWN Crashed 0xC0000005, minidump in C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\logs\#crash.2003.06.04 11.33.44.dmp
This dumpfile can be loaded into MSDEV and the crash can be replayed and then debugged. When reporting a crash with a dump file, make sure to include the build number along with the description. If a build number for a particular dump file is not known, the file is useless!
Dumpfiles û DeLuxe Edition Normally the size of a dump file is around 50 KB. It includes the basic state of the application at the time of the crash. If the crash is reproducable, it would be great to get the DeLuxe version of the dump file:
Put the following entry in prefs.ini: dumpflags=1
Run the app again and make it crash. Now a big and better dump file is created. The normal size of such file is around 50-200 MB. This file includes the total state of everything, and is second best to actually crashing while running MSDEV.
To revert back to normal dump files, remove the entry from prefs.ini, or set the dumpflags value to 0.
It goes without saying - COMPRESS THE FILES! Use, for example, www.winace.com 's winace on max compression. Say what's within the compressed file in your bug report.

When encountering a bug, quit the game and start log server, then go in game and try to reproduce it(remember to create a new workspace in the log server), log files that have been running for hours are no good and much of useless information that has to be sorted out, this will keep things nice and clean.

Do you have to highlight the window doing the logging when you hit Ctrl+D, or can you do it in game?

For those that are new to the Chaos server, there are other things that are handy to know:
* Join the "eve-chaos" channel in game on the test server there. Most people on the server are there as well as devs and other helpful people.
* If there is an event going on, good idea to relocate your clone closer. Note: The spawned stations show up as thier name not thier location in clone station list. i.e. Fight Club Co Station no Rasile I - Fight Club Co Station.
* To get transported somewhere, ask in the #eve-chaos IRC channel with a "please tr <your char> to <someplace>". This can also work if there are bug hunters or polaris or devs in the in game eve-chaos chat channel.
* You can generally request items to be spawned for you to test out. Knowing the exact spelling/name of the item helps immensly. That being said, dont expect to get Titans or any other super phat items. (Neiblung Mining Laser V, VM-11 Amplified Multispectral Shield Matrix (80% to all resists), Rayliegh Mega Neutron Blaser V, Station Platforms, etc.)
* You can generally ask for some pirate ships to be spawned if you want to test out weapons, tracking, damage mods, etc.
* Dont be to attached to your ships and items on Chaos. They are very likely to be destroyed in testing out things. Luckily your friendly neighborhood devs are able to replace said items with relative ease. Ask nicely.
Thats all I can think of for now. Maybe more things later.

If you join the test corp, there are hangars filled with hundreds of each ship and module that you are able to access and use. (Free of charge) If you dont join one of the test corps, the bug hunters and devs will usually be able to spawn items and trade them directly to you in station as well.
One reason for not joining the test corp is usually that you are CEO of your own corp and there is no replacement in your corp and disbanding the company takes days, so its a real pain.
And your skills are the same as on the regular server, mostly. (They are usually a little behind because they only copy over ever couple weeks.) Usually the copies are done when they are nearing a patch to make sure everything is working as planned.
(The most recent copy is pretty old though, its from July 2. Though that may change at any time to be more recent.)

Ask the GM's or Polaris crew in eve-chaos to relocate you to the system where they have based core testing
Join the corp they state is for testing - you will find the items/ ships in the corp hangar

1164 was a bad patch.
As I write this, we're on 1174, the patches form the current tranquility version are as follows:

@Heff: Make a new copy of your Eve-Installation for the Tranquility-Server (version 1165) as there is no patch for 1159 on the server.
@Thallia: If you changed your password in the last days, use your old password.
